“Final Fantasy” title announced for the 3DS

We all knew it was an inevitablelity. I mean, a Final Fantasy game on the Nintendo 3DS? It wouldn’t have made any sense for it not to happen, especially with Square promising to support the system, but here it is. It’s just not what you think it is.

Instead of opting for your traditional turn-based formula, Theatrhythm Final Fantasy is a rhythm based game that is a homage to the neo-classical compositions that the series is known for. While Square has yet to reveal exact gameplay details, from what they’ve revealed through AndriaSang it definitely looks like something that Square Enix fans will need to pay attention to.

When playing the game, you will be able to select a title, from Final Fantasy I through Final Fantasy XIII that all feature three separate stages: “field,” “battle” and event.” Each of these stages will feature different styles of gameplay with selectable difficulties making it perfect for novices and experienced gamers alike.
In the game, you can have up to a party of four “chibi-fied” Final Fantasy characters with art done by the same person who worked on Kingdom Hearts Mobile. Although Square has yet to detail who will be in the game, from the provided screenshots, you can clearly see Cloud, Lightning, the Warrior of Light and the Onion Knight; a perfect excuse for you to finally take the system out of your 3DS case.

Just like previous Final Fantasy games, the game will feature a level up system where the player’s characters will gain experience upon completing a level, along with collection aspects such as music and movies. It is unclear as to what role leveling up will play at this time.

Expect to hear remixes of famous Square compositions such as “Clash on the Big Bridge (Final Fantasy V),” “One Winged Angel (Final Fantasy VII),” “the Crystal Theme” and more. You can hear a remixed sample of the main theme at the game’s official Japanese site.
